We are in an excellent situation
near to the Bab Doukkala mosque in the old town or "medina",
only ten minutes from the souks and ten minutes from the modern
area of Gueliz. We are within minutes of some of the best restaurants
in Marrakech and are situated in a quiet derb with excellent road
access for parking or taxis at the top of the derb.
The area of Bab Doukkala remains a unique working
area within Marrakech and the local market area and busy shopping
street are within minutes of the front door.
A new museum in Marrakech (the palace of the Glaouis)
is five minutes away and is due to open in 2007. The Glaouis were
the fabulously wealthy and ruthless rulers of southern Morocco (by
arrangement with the French) until the 1950 s.Gavin Maxwell's "Lords
of the Atlas" is a gripping account of their life.
Other places we would recommend visiting are the
Majorelle Gardens (a short taxi ride away) which includes an small
but impressive museum of Islamic arts, the Medersa Ben Youssef (a
historic and very beautiful Islamic college, now a museum) - about
15 minutes walk away, and close to the Medersa, the Musee Marrakech
(in a restored palace). At the southern end of the medina the El
Badi palace ( in ruins but home to numerous storks ) is particularly
worth visiting in the late afternoon when views of the (frequently
snow-covered) High Atlas mountains can be enjoyed. The Palais Bahia
and Dar di Said (museum of Moroccan crafts) are also in this area
of the southern medina.
